Overview

Teesside University was awarded full university status in 1992 and is situated in Middlesbrough in the north-east of England. 20,000 full and prt-time students are currently enrolled and it was the first modern university to win a Times Higher Education Award. Since 1992, it has won nine National Teaching Fellowships for excellence in teaching quality. Teesside University was awarded The Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2013 for outstanding work in the field of enterprise and business engagement.

The University is strong in the areas of forensic science, sport and exercise, computer games design and animation. Many of these are accredited by professional bodies. Teesside University supports graduates in finding employment for at least two years after they leave, and many courses include paid work placements as part of the degree.

Services for International Students

Teesside University provides a meet and greet service for international students arriving from overseas and an orientation programme will also help new arrivals settle into the area. Talks and workshops with local and University authorities, as well as meetings with international student advisors, will help provide support throughout the year.

Pre-sessional and in-sessional English language courses are available for students who wish to raise their English level, as well as the more informal International English Language Cafe run by current students.

Ranking

In REF 2021, Teesside University significantly increased the volume of staff and research submitted compared to the 2014 REF, whilst maintaining or enhancing scores across the three main criteria – output, impact and environment.

Case studies detailing the economic, cultural and social impact of the University’s research included strengths in smart energy solutions, public health, combatting organised crime, and diversity in the arts.

Teesside University also increased the proportion of research classed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ – with almost two thirds of research falling into those three and four star categories. The proportion of four star ‘world-leading’ work almost doubled compared to the 2014 submission.

Accommodation

Teesside University guarantees a place in University accommodation to all international students. There is also accommodation available for postgraduate and mature students and Teesside has some of the most affordable university accommodation in the UK, including on-campus halls of residence and off-campus managed houses. There are a little over 1,100 rooms available, with en suite and standard options, generally arranged in groups of 4-11 per shared kitchen.

Location

Teesside University is in Middlesbrough, north Yorkshire.
